For nearly three and a half centuries, the Boylan House has stood at the end of Meeting House Road. And something in that house has been killing boys for centuries.

The town of Monson is a quaint and quiet New England town. Yet the house is terrifying and has been for as long as anyone can remember. Adults put the thing out of mind and ignore the fears of their children, admonishing them to stay away.

Too many boys have vanished into the swamps behind the house. Bodies never recovered. Nothing ever recovered. The families are left with their memories and the disturbing thought that the Boylan House had something to do with it.

Mason Philips knows better than that. He knows that there’s something in the house. Something evil. Something hunting children from time to time.

And Mason has decided that it’s time for the killing to stop.

This is a book I feel conflicted about. On the one hand it has a very engaging story, and the author does a good job building the suspense as the book progresses. I really enjoyed the fact that the author does not give everything away right off the bat, but reveals clues through flashbacks and narration that help to not only drive the overall story but also help set the atmosphere.

However, this book suffers from some flaws that constantly kick the reader out of the mood/story the book is trying to create. There are a lot of errors in this book, from the wrong word used in a sentence (cap instead of cab, not instead of nod), commas that should be present but are not and vice versa (an example is a comma between police and officer), descriptions repeated in a sentence ("He opened it carefully and found a small folded piece of paper folded within it"), and sometimes incorrect references (such as when someone tries the door to the house and the next sentence says the truck was unlocked). These errors give the book the overall feel of a draft, and not a finished book. A simple once-over by someone would have caught a lot of these mistakes, and would have allowed for continued immersion in the story.

Overall I would give the book a 3.5. Great premise, solid pacing, a main character one can identify with, and good atmosphere are the positives of the book, but the mistakes/errors that run throughout the book give this a lower score than it should have received otherwise. Were the author to go back and clean it up, I would give it a solid 5, and I would give his other books a read as well.

Boylan House Supernatural Horror with Scary Ghosts Haunted Houses eBook Ron Ripley Scare Street Reviews

Verry spine tingling. I enjoyed this series just as much as his others. I live that none if the characters resemble one's from another set. I can't wait to get the next one. Thanks Mr Ripley. Keep them coming and if you need a test reader who will give you an honest review keep me in mind. I do have a question but afraid I'd give the ending away if I ask. Bummer cause I'd like to know
A really enjoyable book. I pretty much sat down and read it in one sitting. The story line was great, the characters all fit the story and each other perfectly. also. The story was very different than most spooky mysteries, with alot of twists and turns. Definitely a book to read. My only complaint was that it wasn't all that long for a trilogy set.
I enjoyed the book very much, a real horror story. Ron Ripley is a good story writer and unlike Stephen King, he does not patronize the reader with progressive left snarky comments. This seems to be a plague with NE writers. The marketing technique of calling a short book a Trilogy is rather off putting and pretentious. I guess that is more bucks for the bang. But I will not fault the story nor the writing, I enjoyed the book, it was a fast, short, enjoyable afternoon read. Good authors like Ron Ripley don't need any fancy marketing. Just write.
I just finished last ofThe Haunting books last night, and decided to reread the Boylan House series. I'm glad I did. I think I loved it more this time around, after getting the feel of Mr. Ripley's work. I loved it the first time, but now it's on my all time favorite list. Which of his to read next? Hmmmm...
-The Boylan House Trilogy-
Book 1 The Boylan House
Interesting legend of a haunted house. Being told from the perspective of a man who has had interactions with the entity, once as a child.
Quick read (almost rushed), obviously this is a novella, and I'm glad I got it as a set.
Book 2 Discoveries
As with the first book, it seems rushed along. Like skipping the telling of parts that could've been seriously interesting, but telling the more mundane. Quite a few typos in this second book, some are very obvious and should've been caught.
Book3 The Deadwood Throne
Didn't even bother with the last "book". I certainly am glad this was free.
First off, let me state that I rarely write book reviews and I read a lot of books.

I really liked the Boylan house trilogy. If you want to know what it is about read the item synopsis.

It says 'trilogy', however the series is about the same length as a single novel, broken up into three pieces.

I liked the way this book was structured, with the first part being free, which enabled me to read enough of the book to see if it was something I would be interested in reading, as most samples don't have enough content to really give the reader a good enough idea of whether or not they will enjoy the full book.

I felt obligated to review this book because I purchased the second trilogy from the same Author and in hind site I wish I would have read Boylan house again. If you're not sure if you'll like it get the first part for free. Unlike 'Blood Contract' the 2nd and 3rd book in the Boylan House are just as good as the first.
This brought flashbacks to John Carpenter's "The Fog" (1980 - not the lame remake). Ripley hooked me in from the first chapter. My only disappointment - it's a novel rather than a trilogy. Still, it was genuinely worth the money if this is a genre you love. Children have been disappearing from the area around the old Boylan House for decades. Mason Philips watched one vanish one night when he was just 7-years-old & it has haunted him ever since. Now grown and a Marine Corps veteran, he returns to his hometown to investigate. What Mason uncovers kept me clicking those pages through the night! Characters are well drawn (liked them; wanted to spend time with them); the villains were evil, as in all-caps EVIL; the action fresh & non-stop. Had some copy-editing quibbles ("shudder" instead of "shutter," etc.) but it didn't detract to the point I had to stop reading. "Moving In" brought me to this book. Now, I'll be checking out more. This is not slasher prose, not filled with gratuitous sex, gore or torture. Bad things happen, but it propels the story. It's a gripping, scary thriller. Haven't enjoyed a book like this in years. Thank you, Mr. Ripley.
